Part two of the recordings from Exeter University Folk Society’s session at The Great Western Hotel on 22th March- these ones using the new recorder. This lot are mainly songs- ‘Randall my son’, ‘Old McDonald’, ‘The Poor Wayfaring Stranger’, a nautical pair of ‘Yo ho, haul together’ and ‘The Mermaid’, and finally ‘Applecross Bay’.
Songs and tunes from the Exeter University Folk Society Session on the 22 March. This was our first session at The Great Western Hotel, and the first time we experimented with the music department’s new recorder- these are mainly the bits recorded on my old one. The calls in the second set (single guard, double curleys etc.) are for Rapper sword dancing- you can hear our calling -on song near the end. We have plenty of diddly-dee music; a new song about a giant hamster Ram, Sir; a request for some Wolfe Tones; some Klezmer tunes; and a bit of double-triple-damning.
A set of jigs from the Exeter University Folk Society Session, recorded on the music department’s fancy new recorder at one of our new hosts The Great Western Hotel on 22th March.
At the start of May what you really need are more distractions, so there’s a couple more recordings from this session to come.
Cleaner recordings of the Klezmer tunes in our tunebook. The first is Itzikel.
Klezmer is Yiddish folk music, and you can read more about Kevin Burke’s introduction of Itzikel into the Irish folk tradition and folk music in Israel here.
Some recordings of our Klezmer tunes for Jess. If they play the sets on Thursday I’ll be sure to properly record all the tunes, but the one you hear for most of this is Itzikel.

Like any respectable folk songs there are many versions, and I make no promises that the version sung at the session is a word perfect match for my links, but they’ll give you an idea- and having a go at the chorus is the important bit anyway.
Recordings of the tunes will follow- if you want to hear something in particular I’m happy to upload it, just ask me at Folk Soc. or leave a message by clicking the Questions? Comments? link. If the lovely singers want to be credited I’ll very happily attach your names, thank you for sharing these songs.
A compilation of recordings from the Exeter University Folk Society session at the Jolly Porter Inn on 8th March. A mix of tunes and songs- mostly traditional, but some are just silly. This set includes plenty of favourites (including the whole of Itzikel) , but also some of the more recent introductions- ‘Bonny Ship the Diamond’, ‘Yellow’s on the Broom’, ‘This way, that way’, Jess’ ‘Peck a little’ song, and a short extract from Bohemian Rhapsody.
The first set of recordings from last night’s session at The Jolly Porter.
Plenty of tunes, and unusual features include: Lord of the Dance, last year’s beginner’s session tune played slowly, Riding on a Donkey, Cape Cod Girls, Calon Lân, and the Oompa Loompa theme (look out for our Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ceilidh next month).
I’m sorry about the quality- I misplaced my recorder so had to use my old phone instead.
